Οι ΗΠΑ εισήλθαν σε συνθήκες οικονομικής ύφεσης (recession) το 2007, μετά από την κατάρρευση του κλάδου subprime mortgage της αμερικανικής οικονομίας. Η κατάρρευση του κλάδου subprime mortgage της αμερικανικής οικονομίας πυροδότησε μια παγκόσμια χρηματοοικονομική κρίση, η οποία εξελίχθηκε σε μεγάλη ύφεση. Τα αξιόγραφα που βασίζονταν στα προβληματικά αμερικανικά subprime mortgages διαπραγματεύονταν στις αγορές παγκοσμίως και γι’ αυτό η κρίση τους επέδρασε στις αγορές σε παγκόσμια κλίμακα. Το χρηματοοικονομικό σύστημα των ΗΠΑ δηλητηρίασε τους συμμάχους των ΗΠΑ, ειδικά δε τους πιο στενούς συμμάχους των ΗΠΑ, δηλαδή τη Δυτική Ευρώπη. Κατ’ επέκταση, εξ αυτού του λόγου, οι ευρωπαϊκές κυβερνήσεις εξαναγκάστηκαν να διασώσουν (“bailout”) τα τραπεζικά τους συστήματα, στα λογιστικά βιβλία των οποίων ήταν εγγεγραμμένες μεγάλες ποσότητες από αυτά τα προβληματικά περιουσιακά στοιχεία (assets), δηλαδή τοξικά αξιόγραφα, προερχόμενα από τη «φούσκα» των αμερικανικών subprime mortgages και από την ακόμη μεγαλύτερη «φούσκα» των χρηματιστηρίων παραγώγων (financial derivatives). Η απόφαση των ευρωπαϊκών κυβερνήσεων να προβούν σε μεγάλα προγράμματα bailout, προκειμένου να διασώσουν χρηματοδοτικά (αντί να θεραπεύσουν με δομικά μέτρα) τα προβληματικά και εντόνως κερδοσκοπικά χρηματοπιστωτικά τους συστήματα, σε συνδυασμό με τα ήδη υψηλά επίπεδα εθνικού χρέους που χαρακτήριζαν ήδη τα περισσότερα κράτη της Ευρώπης πυροδότησαν αμφιβολίες μεταξύ των επενδυτών σχετικά με το αν οι ευρωπαϊκές κυβερνήσεις θα μπορούσαν επιτυχώς να εξυπηρετήσουν τις δανειακές ανάγκες τους και γι’ αυτόν τον λόγο, τελικά, προκλήθηκε η κρίση χρέους των ευρωπαϊκών κρατών (European sovereign debt crisis). Το 2009, είχε ήδη καταστεί σαφές ότι ορισμένα κράτη μέλη της ευρωζώνης θα χρειάζονταν βοήθεια από εξωτερικούς θεσμούς για να διαχειριστούν τα χρέη τους. Ένα από αυτά τα κράτη ήταν και η Ελλάδα.

If sanctions did not work in Cuba or Iran they will not work in Russia. Period.  After all Russia is the biggest country in the world and has plenty of natural resources. Trying to isolate Russia is like trying to remove the water from the Pacific Ocean. 

 

Russia will not retreat because of economic sanctions. Ukraine is extremely important for Putin. He is willing to invest a lot of capital for it; a lot more than France or Portugal. Putin not only promotes himself as the Defender of Traditional Christian values against a Sodom and Gomorrah West but above all as the Strong Defender of Russia and Russian people: as the Strong Man no one can mess with. Thinking he will abandon the Russians in Eastern Ukraine because the West places economic sanctions on him is like saying that a heavyweight Boxing champion will not go into ring because his opponent looks angry.
